Question by IC: Need help with career change???
I’m currently working as a training specialist. I like my job but do not like the industry I am working in. I have a bachelors in social work and am considering a career change to a school counselor or academic advisor. I would like to make a move towards the education field. After doing some research, I found some jobs within the public school system and local college/universities that I am interested in. Most of these positions require a Masters degree. However, some of the job postings are not every specific in which area the Masters should be in. Some state a Masters in Counseling, Education or Higher Education, but then others aren’t specific. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do? I would like to work in the field before I decide on a Masters degree, but I am not sure how to start out in the field when most of the positions require a Masters. What’s the best way for me to get my foot in the door?

Best answer:

Answer by mickbw
I am far from an expert on this matter but I know that each state has labor department web sites and many of them have assessment tools to help narrow down what skill sets and schooling you need to help decide what schooling you need.

I have included links to a good web site name job-hunt.org that may help you in your research.

Question by J O: In college, and confused about a career path….?
I am currently doing my general studies and I am torn between Hospitality Management and Chemical Dependency Counselor. I have a family so i need to make a good amount of money, the hospitality degree i can do in 2, the chemical one requires 4-6 yrs than internship. What do i do? I would like to hear from someone who is in those fields and how easy is it to get a job as a drugabuse counselor?

Best answer:

Answer by MigrainBoy161
You’ll probably make more money in hospitality management. I’ve worked in the mental health field for 7 years and a lot of clients I have also have chemical dependency issues. Their chemical dependency counselors don’t make very good money at all and a lot of them are former drug users.

Also, chemical dependency counseling is depressing and you really can’t go far in the field.

I loved typing. I even type 93 wpm, but even that doesn’t save me from my office jobs. I’ve gotten fired twice for making errors with copies, other side projects, etc.

My last job I got fired because I wasn’t catching on to the accounting skills of the job. It is very hard for me to think mathematically.

I’m currently unemployed and desperate to find a new job so that we don’t lose our house and cars. I’m also taking this as a sign that I need to venture on a new career path.

I love being able to move around, not stay in one spot. I also heard that I am good with people and animals. I initially didn’t think I was good with people but everybody keeps telling me I am, even my husband.

The problem is, the jobs I really want to do require at least a bachelor’s degree. (Vet tech, personal trainer, zoologist, event planner, psychologist, counselor)

Best answer:

Answer by Diane A
Vet tech is not a bachelors degree-it is a trainingg program at the community college level; event planner doesn’t require any degree (but there are certificates), personal trainer also does not require a bachelors-so not sure where you are doing your research. I advise getting the course catalogs for several community colleges in your area and see what they offer. There are all kinds of 2 year careers: CAD designer to horticulture.

I’ve self studied C++ and have an aptitude for it but have been told by career counselors that C# , Java and .Net are the best way to go since, C++ is mostly outsourced overseas. I don’t have an educational background in Computer Science or a technical field. I have a BA in sociology. Any suggestions?

Answer by colonelSmuckers
Java.
It’s platform independent and many of the criticisms against the language are becoming N/A. There is a real-time version which will continue to become more popular. The processing and memory resources make the JVM overhead negligible.

Question by : Military Career Preparation Program?
I failed to qualify for the Army yesterday because of the AIMS test. I scored a 61 on my ASVAB (which is an amazing score since 50% of the USA scores 50 or lower) and all my line scores exceeded 105 (qualifying for all jobs in the Army), my meps counselor told me to go to job corps or to adult education classes so I don’t have to take the AIMS or TAPAS again, I decided to go with job corps because I feel it is the most practical and will be better than going to school again. I looked at the academics at job corps and they have MILCAP ( military career preparation program) which helps people get their high school diploma, my meps counselor told me to go to that so I don’t have to take the AIMS or TAPAS again and I can just rely on my asvab score.

Answer by matt
don’t go to the job core, study and retake your asVAB again and Again till you get a better score. Go to college and take some college classes. Go to a SAT of ACT prep class, that wil help you in the math and reading skills portion of the ASVAB.
goo luck
